On January 30, 1948, Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated by Nathuram Godse at Gandhi Smriti in Birla’s house, just months after India’s independence. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar at- tended a prayer meeting at Gandhi Smriti in New Delhi and earlier on the same day, the PM tweeted on X, saying, “Tributes to Pujya Bapu on his Punya Tithi. Union Home Minister Amit Shah also paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on his death anniversary. “On behalf of the grate- ful nation, I pay my tribute to Mahatma Gandhi, the leading figure of the Indian freedommovement, who popularised the Indian values of truth, non-violence and fight against injustice across the world,” Shah said, adding, “Mahatma Gandhi strengthened the freedommovement by binding the country in the thread of unity …His thoughts towards cleanliness, self- reliance and empowerment of rural India will continue to inspire the countrymen,” Shah posted on X.pposition leader Rahul Gandhi paying his tributes to Mahatma Gandhi described the departed leader as the “soul” of the nation. Taking to X, Rahul Gandhi said, “Gandhiji is not just a person, he is the soul of India and is alive in every Indian even today. The power of truth, non-vio- lence and fearlessness can shake the roots of even the biggest empire – the entire world takes inspiration from these ideals of his. Hundreds of saluta- tions to the Father of the Nation, Mahat- ma, our Bapu on his Martyrdom Day.” Chief Ministers and leaders of vari- ous states held special memorials to pay tribute nationwide. Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, in his social media post on X, wrote, “Tribute to the great revolution- ary and Father of our nation Mahatma Gandhi, on his death anniversary. Today, let us also honour our bravehearts who attained martyrdom in the line of duty, shielding the integrity of our mother- land.
