D ays ago in Times of India, Som- nath Mukherjee wrote with ac- curate arguments that India must think more of rebuilding herself which will be a greater solution to its problems that defeating Pakistan. The tail of his piece had a dire warning to India and people running her affairs - “ Do not forget your David- ian instincts .. even long after you have become a Goliath ”. The David in us must choose to deal with the growing economic disparity hidden in Indian Goliath image. While equanimity is the buzz word in public discourses, in reality we are no where near gaining equality for citizens than we were during British or other invaders. A vivid idea of troubles plaguing our society can be gained for the following 1st hand witness by yours truly. In Coimbatore a Hindu woman was wary of renting out her premises to a muslim woman but agreed only be- cause this prospective tenant’s husband is a Hindu . That same muslim tenant was given a chance to see the home of a muslim land lord only because she was a muslim . This prospective muslim woman refused the Muslim land lords’ offer and decided to lease from the Hindu woman. Can we understand the impact of being faced by such a dilemma on the psyche of an average Indian in year 2025 ? Economic equality may be impossible when individuals are unable to find ac- commodation they can afford but cannot avail due to discrimination. Another example comes frommaxi- mum city Mumbai . The mighty lo- cal body of Mumbai, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation ( BMC ) in unable to implement its developmental pro- grams when a community opposes it. Notwithstanding that all laws and the courts favour the corporation, it cannot implement the law. For readers here are instances - Recently Bombay High Court has ordered a ban on POP (Plaster Of Paris ) Ganapathy idols. Not a single officer in BMC has the gumption to implement the order and are whiling their time till the errant idol makers approach courts for relief. The litigation will trudge inter- minable as in numerous cases of India, while Idols made of polluting substances will continue to flood markets and poison waterbodies. But thanks to perseverant court, the coming season will see only idols above 6 feet in natural waterbodies which too will be cleared the day after immersions. High courts have passed judgements against loudspeakers and open air DJ blaring musical events. But not the jar- ring loudspeakers frommosques, not the brain shattering music during Ganesh festivals or Ambedkar and Buddha Jayantis or the weddings and birthday parties have ever ceased !!. Directions against fireworks after 10 pm are vio- lated routinely even in processions that are guarded with police “bandobast”. It is the contumacious Indians that have vanquished our law and order. It is the failure of our institutions primarily educational to instil a sense of pride in obeying the law. Often today we see our citizens beaming after breaking a line or rule. A man who can fearlessly play loud music or burst crackers late into the night or drive on the wrong side of a highway in broad daylight is considered to be an influential person. How difficult will it be for separatists to find local support for nefarious designs? Terrorism is a lucra- tive business only in society where youth idolise the scum of society. Days after Somnath’s piece another writer in a Sunday Times article ex- plained why we need to focus on our eco- nomical successes and failures more than Pakistan skirmish. We need to vanquish the enemy within, only then will the pro- verbial foreign hand be defeated. … to be continued.
