www.newsindiatimes.com – that’s all you need to know News India Times (May 30, 2026 - June 5, 2026) June 5, 2026 18 Sports S unrisers Hyderabad assistant coach James Frank- lin hailed Vaibhav Sooryavanshi as a generational talent onWednesday after the Rajasthan Royals teenager smashed 97 off 29 balls to power his side to victory in their Indian Premier League eliminator. The 15-year-old also broke Chris Gayle’s record for most sixes in an IPL season, taking his tally to 65 in the match and surpassing the formerWest Indies captain’s 59 set in 2012. Sooryavanshi’s performance helped Rajasthan secure a 47-run win that kept their hopes of reaching the final alive, and Franklin said his potential was frightening. “I don’t think anyone’s ever seen a talent like this. It’s freakish what he’s doing at the moment,” he told report- ers. “To think that he’s potentially got 25 years left in the career, it’s quite scary. “He’s only going to get better, stronger and more mature with how he bats. So, it’s just devastating at the moment.” The season’s leading run-scorer struck 12 sixes in his innings, including three in a row off Hyderabad captain Pat Cummins, but fell short of Gayle’s mark for the fastest IPL century (30 balls). Sooryavanshi, who last year hit the first ball he faced of his IPL career for a six aged 14 and later became the youngest player to score a Twenty20 hundred, has amassed 680 runs this season at a strike rate of 242.85. “There’s a very small margin where you could bowl to him,” Franklin said. “He’s an amazing talent that he can start playing around with it (bowling variations) and then start to cause the bowlers to have to go to other places, which tend to then go back into his strength.” Rajasthan will play Gujarat Titans in the second quali- fier on Friday, with the winner advancing to Sunday’s final against defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru. -Reuters Cricket-Sooryavanshi A Once-In-A-Lifetime Talent, Says Hyderabad Assistant Franklin PHOTO:REUTERS/FRANCIS MASCARENHAS PHOTO:REUTERS/FRANCIS MASCARENHAS Cricket – Indian Premier League – IPL – Eliminator – Sunrisers Hyderabad v Rajasthan Royals – Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium, New Chandigarh, India – May 27, 2026 Rajasthan Royals’ Vaibhav Sooryavanshi enters the ground for the start of the first innings Cricket – Indian Premier League – IPL – Eliminator – Sunrisers Hyderabad v Rajasthan Royals – Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium, New Chandigarh, India – May 27, 2026 Rajasthan Royals’ Vaibhav Sooryavanshi in action -PARIS S eventh seed Taylor Fritz was stunned 7-6(5) 7-6(5) 6-7(9) 6-1 by fellow American Nishesh Ba- savareddy in the first round of the French Open on Sunday, May 24, 2026, as his injury-disrupted claycourt season ended with a whimper. Fritz returned with an opening defeat at Geneva last week after two months away due to a chronic knee issue and he showed signs of rust under the afternoon sun on Court Suzanne Lenglen against 21-year-old wildcard Basavareddy. It was Basavareddy’s composure on his Roland Garros main draw debut, however, that secured the victory and left his fans standing in their seats chanting his name at the end of an entertaining clash. “I’m super happy to get through that after losing that third set … thank you all,” Basavareddy said. “All the players play their best in these tournaments and for me to do that today means the world.” After a tight opening set slipped away in a see- sawing tiebreak, the 28-year-old came out firing in the second frame, only to surrender an early break as Basavareddy mixed up his game with impeccable drop shots to trouble his compatriot. Fritz was soon staring at back-to-back first-round defeats at Roland Garros when world number 148 Basavareddy unleashed a powerful serve late in the second-set tiebreak to double his lead in the match. The third set went with serve for 12 games and Fritz let out a loud scream when he won the tiebreak after saving a match point but Basavareddy was not to be denied a maiden top-10 win, and he took control of the fourth set and finished the job. “I knew I was playing at a high level,” Basavareddy added. “If I kept going, I’d have more chances, and I was able to come out strong in the beginning of the fourth set. That was the best set I think I’ve ever played.” Up next for Basavareddy is a second-round clash against Alexander Shevchenko or Alex Michelsen. -Reuters By Shrivathsa Sridhar Tennis-Basavareddy’s Win Shocks French Open PHOTOS:REUTERS/GUGLIELMO MANGIAPANE Tennis – French Open – Roland Garros, Paris, France – May 24, 2026 Nishesh Basavareddy of the U.S. celebrates after winning the second set during his first round match against Taylor Fritz of the U.S. By Suramya Kaushik Tennis – French Open – Roland Garros, Paris, France – May 24, 2026 Nishesh Basavareddy of the U.S. in action during his first round match against Taylor Fritz of the U.S.
