Deol acts in the film ‘Batwara 1947’ which is directed by Rajkumar Santoshi and also stars the actor’s son Karan Deol. The film’s trailer offered a glimpse into India’s partition and its horrifying tales. “During the partition, my grandfa- ther and grandmother were there, and they told us the stories which were very emotional. I have heard from them that how during that time in every village, whenever something used to happen, the first priority was to save themselves or hide because the situations were not right. There were a lot of stories like this. I don’t wish to talk about it. I was lucky enough to spend most of my days in Punjab. So there are always some connections,” Sunny Deol told media. Sunny Deol also shared his love of working in movies whose stories sound “pure” to him and is societal in nature. “My films are associated with society. We never make a controversy about any- thing, nor will we ever want to or ever do, about such characters. That is why our stories are always pure; in my opinion, and every person who watches it, gets connected to some emotion. So I think that’s the kind of cinema I love to do and I have been doing,” said Sunny Deol. Directed by Rajkumar Santoshi and produced under Aamir Khan Produc- tions, ‘Batwara 1947’ also stars Shabana Azmi, Karan Deol, Ali Fazal and Abhi- manyu Singh in key roles. Set against the backdrop of the 1947 Partition, Batwara 1947 follows a family whose lives are irrevocably altered as vio- lence, fear and forced migration tear apart communities that once lived side by side. Yet, amid unimaginable loss and deepen- ing divisions, the film celebrates the cour- age to choose kindness over hatred and hope over despair, read a press note. The movie is slated for a worldwide theatrical release on August 14, 2026. News India Times (August 1, 2026 - August 7, 2026) August 7, 2026 12 Community C onnecticut Governor Ned Lamont on Thursday, 30 July 2026, marked the establishment of the Con- necticut–India Trade Commission at a ceremonial bill-signing event held at the Connecticut State Capitol in Hartford. The initiative creates a formal mechanism to promote trade, investment and institutional cooperation between Connecticut and India. The ceremony was attended by India’s Consul General in NewYork, Ambassa- dor Binaya Srikanta Pradhan, as well as Lieutenant Governor Susan Bysiewicz , Representative Stephen Meskers, Chair of the Connecticut General Assembly’s Commerce Committee; Senator Sujata Gadkar-Wilcox; and members of the Indian American community. Governor Lamont highlighted Con- necticut’s expanding engagement with India and said the Commission could help strengthen commercial, technological, educational and cultural links between the two sides. He also referred to Connect- icut’s economic development mission to India in early 2025, when he led a delega- tion of state officials and business leaders to Chennai, Bengaluru and Mumbai from February 23 to March 1, holding meetings with government officials and corporate executives to explore investment and business opportunities. Ambassador Pradhan welcomed the creation of the Commission as a platform for identifying and advancing areas of co- operation between India and Connecticut. He highlighted opportunities in advanced manufacturing, aerospace, information technology, cybersecurity, clean energy, healthcare, higher education and innova- tion. The Commission was established un- der Public Act 26-78 following approval by both the Connecticut Senate and House of Representatives. The July 30 ceremony marked the formal establishment of the Commission, a press release said. The Commission will comprise 27 specified members, with provision for ad- ditional members as considered necessary by the chairpersons of the General Assem- bly’s Commerce Committee. Its member- ship will include legislative appointees and Commerce Committee members, gubernatorial appointees, representatives of public higher education and a chamber of commerce, and members of Connecti- cut’s Indian-American communities. Under the law, the Commission will work to advance bilateral trade and investment, promote business and academic exchanges, encourage mutual economic and infrastructure investment, and initiate cooperation on policy issues of shared interest. It will also explore new opportunities for collaboration in technol- ogy and the arts. Connecticut joins neighboring New Jersey in establishing a dedicated mecha- nism to strengthen relations with India. The New Jersey–India Commission was created by then-Governor Phil Murphy through Executive Order No. 354 on Feb- ruary 6, 2024, to promote trade, invest- ment, economic development, education- al cooperation and cultural exchanges. The Connecticut Commission is ex- pected to provide businesses, universities, policymakers and community organiza- tions with a continuing forum for devel- oping economic and institutional partner- ships between the state and India.
